Overview

Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda’s smallest savannah park, located in the western region along the highway between Kampala and the country’s southwestern attractions (like Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth National Park). Spanning roughly 370 square kilometers, Lake Mburo is often seen as a convenient stopover, but it’s much more than that. Its diverse habitats range from savannah and woodland to wetlands and lakes, hosting a vibrant array of wildlife, including zebra, impala, and over 300 bird species. The park’s accessibility, close proximity to Kampala (about a 4-hour drive), and unique offerings like horseback safaris make it a must-visit for those seeking an intimate and varied safari experience in Uganda.

Scenery

Lake Mburo National Park is characterized by undulating hills, open savannah plains, and five enchanting lakes within its boundaries. The savannah is interspersed with woodlands and seasonal wetlands, creating scenic mosaics teeming with wildlife. The park’s namesake, Lake Mburo, and surrounding water bodies contribute to a tranquil atmosphere where rolling hills reflect in the calm lake waters. This blend of open vistas, gentle slopes, and shimmering lakes offers a more intimate safari experience compared to Uganda’s larger parks.

Best time to visit

The dry seasons (December to February and June to mid-September) are often considered the best times to visit Lake Mburo National Park. During these months, vegetation is less dense and wildlife congregates around water sources, making animal sightings more frequent. Roads and walking trails are generally easier to navigate as well. However, bird enthusiasts may also enjoy visiting in the wetter months for prime birding opportunities. The park remains open year-round, so you can plan your visit based on your interests and preferences.

High season (Peak Tourist Periods):
December to February and June to September. Visitor numbers typically increase during the dry months, when wildlife-viewing conditions are at their best. Accommodations may be in higher demand, so booking in advance is recommended.
Low season (Less Busy Months):
March to May and October to November. These wetter months see fewer travelers. Lodges may offer discounted rates, and the lush vegetation provides excellent backdrops for photography and birdwatching. However, some roads may be muddy and less passable during this time.
